Epoxy River Table vs Solid Wood Table: Which Is Right for You?
Epoxy river tables are dramatic and eye-catching. Solid wood tables are timeless and understated. Here is how to decide which is right for your home and lifestyle.
Two of our most popular custom dining table styles sit at opposite ends of the visual spectrum. An epoxy river table makes a bold, dramatic statement β a channel of coloured resin flowing between two wood slabs like a river through a canyon. A solid wood table is quieter, more timeless, and lets the natural beauty of the grain speak for itself.
Both are exceptional pieces of furniture. The question is which one is right for your home, your lifestyle, and your taste.
What Is an Epoxy River Table?
An epoxy river table is built from two wood slabs β typically live edge β with a gap between them that is filled with coloured epoxy resin. The resin is poured in layers, often with pigments, metallic powders, or glow-in-the-dark additives, and allowed to cure to a glass-hard finish. The result is a table with a dramatic visual centrepiece that catches the light and changes appearance depending on the angle and lighting.
At Calgary Wood Works, we build epoxy river tables in Calgary using Canadian walnut, maple burl, and elm slabs. Our most popular epoxy colours are deep ocean blue, black, and metallic silver β though we can match virtually any colour you have in mind.
What Is a Solid Wood Table?
A solid wood dining table is built from a single slab or multiple boards of the same species, with no epoxy river. The focus is entirely on the wood β its grain, colour, natural voids, and live edge (if applicable). Solid wood tables are quieter and more versatile than epoxy river tables, and they tend to age more gracefully.
Comparing the Two
Aesthetics
Epoxy river table: Bold, contemporary, and unmistakably a statement piece. The resin channel draws the eye immediately and becomes the focal point of any room. Best suited to modern, industrial, or eclectic interiors.
Solid wood table: Timeless and versatile. Works in traditional, transitional, farmhouse, and modern spaces. The beauty is in the wood itself β the grain, the natural edge, the warmth of the finish.
Durability
Both types of table are extremely durable when built correctly. The epoxy resin in a river table is harder than the wood itself once cured β it won't scratch or dent easily. However, epoxy can yellow slightly over time when exposed to direct sunlight, and deep scratches in the resin are harder to repair than scratches in an oiled wood surface.
Solid wood tables finished with Osmo Hardwax Oil are easy to spot-repair β a light sand and a fresh coat of oil will restore the surface to like-new condition. This is a meaningful advantage for families with young children.
Maintenance
Epoxy river table: Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and prolonged direct sunlight. Deep scratches require professional repair.
Solid wood table: Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Re-oil once or twice a year to maintain the finish. Surface scratches can be sanded out and re-oiled at home.
Cost
Epoxy river tables are generally more expensive than solid wood tables of the same dimensions. The additional cost comes from the epoxy materials, the extra time required for multiple pour-and-cure cycles, and the precision needed to achieve a bubble-free, level pour. Expect to pay $400β$1,200 more for an epoxy river table compared to a comparable solid wood table.
Lead Time
Epoxy river tables take longer to build. Each pour of resin requires 24β48 hours of cure time, and most river tables require 3β5 pours to achieve the desired depth. Our typical lead time for an epoxy river table is 6β10 weeks, compared to 4β6 weeks for a solid wood table.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose an epoxy river table if:
- You want a dramatic, conversation-starting centrepiece
- Your interior is modern, industrial, or eclectic
- You're comfortable with a higher price point and longer lead time
- You don't have young children who will scratch the surface regularly
Choose a solid wood table if:
- You prefer a timeless, understated aesthetic
- You want a table that works in multiple interior styles
- Easy home maintenance and repairability are important to you
- You're working with a tighter budget or timeline
