How to Care for an Osmo-Finished Solid Wood Table

Every custom dining table we build at Calgary Wood Works is finished with Osmo Hardwax Oil β€” a premium German penetrating oil-wax blend that has become the gold standard for solid wood furniture finishes. It's durable, food-safe, and remarkably easy to maintain. But like any quality finish, it rewards a little knowledge and regular care.

This guide covers everything you need to know to keep your Osmo-finished table looking beautiful for decades.

What Is Osmo Hardwax Oil?

Osmo Hardwax Oil is a penetrating finish β€” it soaks into the wood fibres rather than forming a film on top of the surface. This is fundamentally different from polyurethane or lacquer finishes, which sit on top of the wood like a plastic coating.

Because Osmo penetrates the wood, the finish feels like wood β€” not like plastic. It enhances the natural colour and grain without obscuring it. And because it's a penetrating finish, it's much easier to repair than a film finish: you can spot-repair a scratch or worn area without refinishing the entire table.

Osmo Hardwax Oil is also food-safe once cured, which makes it an excellent choice for dining tables.

Daily Cleaning

Wipe spills immediately. Osmo-finished wood is water-resistant, not waterproof. Standing water left on the surface for extended periods can raise the grain and leave white marks. Wipe spills as soon as they happen with a clean, dry cloth.

Clean with a damp cloth. For everyday cleaning, a slightly damp cloth is all you need. Wipe in the direction of the grain, then dry with a clean cloth.

Use Osmo Wash & Care for deeper cleaning. For more thorough cleaning, Osmo makes a dedicated cleaner called Wash & Care that is formulated for Osmo-finished surfaces. A small amount diluted in water, applied with a damp cloth and wiped dry, will clean the surface without damaging the finish.

Avoid harsh chemicals. Do not use bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, or abrasive cleaners on an Osmo-finished surface. These will strip the oil and damage the wood.

Protecting the Surface

Use coasters and placemats. Hot dishes, wet glasses, and acidic foods can all affect the finish over time. Coasters under glasses and placemats under hot dishes are simple habits that will significantly extend the life of your finish.

Use a table pad for extended heat exposure. If you regularly place hot pots or serving dishes directly on the table, a silicone table pad provides better protection than a placemat.

Avoid direct sunlight. Prolonged direct sunlight will cause any wood finish to fade and the wood itself to change colour over time. If your dining room receives strong direct sunlight, consider window treatments or UV-filtering glass.

Annual Maintenance: Re-Oiling

This is the most important maintenance step, and it's simpler than most people expect.

Once or twice a year β€” or whenever the surface starts to look dry or dull β€” apply a thin coat of Osmo Hardwax Oil to refresh the finish. Here's how:

What you need:

  • Osmo Hardwax Oil (same product used on the original finish β€” we recommend Osmo 3032 Satin or 3062 Semi-Matte for dining tables)
  • A lint-free cloth or Osmo application pad
  • Fine steel wool (0000 grade) or a fine Scotch-Brite pad

Steps:

  1. Clean the table thoroughly and allow it to dry completely
  2. Lightly scuff the surface with 0000 steel wool or a fine Scotch-Brite pad, working in the direction of the grain. This opens the surface slightly to accept the new oil
  3. Wipe away the dust with a clean, dry cloth
  4. Apply a very thin coat of Osmo Hardwax Oil with a lint-free cloth or application pad, working in the direction of the grain. Less is more β€” a thin coat absorbs better than a thick one
  5. Allow to penetrate for 30 minutes, then wipe off any excess with a clean cloth
  6. Allow to cure for 8–12 hours before using the table

That's it. One thin coat, once or twice a year, will keep your table looking like new indefinitely.

Repairing Scratches and Worn Areas

One of the biggest advantages of an Osmo finish over polyurethane is repairability. A scratch in a polyurethane finish requires sanding back the entire surface and refinishing. A scratch in an Osmo finish can be spot-repaired.

For light surface scratches:

  1. Lightly sand the scratched area with 220-grit sandpaper, working in the direction of the grain
  2. Wipe away the dust
  3. Apply a thin coat of Osmo Hardwax Oil to the repaired area
  4. Allow to cure, then blend the edges with a clean cloth

For deeper scratches or gouges:

  1. Sand the area with 150-grit sandpaper, then 220-grit
  2. If the scratch is very deep, you may need to fill it with a wood filler that matches the species before sanding
  3. Apply Osmo Hardwax Oil and allow to cure

The repaired area may look slightly different from the surrounding surface initially, but it will blend in over time as the finish ages uniformly.

What About Water Rings?

White water rings are caused by moisture trapped under the finish. On an Osmo-finished table, they're usually superficial and easy to remove.

Method 1: Apply a small amount of Osmo Hardwax Oil directly to the ring, allow it to penetrate for 30 minutes, then wipe off. This often resolves the issue.

Method 2: Lightly sand the area with 0000 steel wool, wipe clean, and apply a thin coat of Osmo.

Products We Recommend

  • Osmo Hardwax Oil 3032 (Satin) β€” our standard finish for dining tables
  • Osmo Hardwax Oil 3062 (Semi-Matte) β€” for a flatter, more matte appearance
  • Osmo Wash & Care β€” for regular cleaning
  • Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner β€” for removing stubborn marks

These products are available at most Calgary paint and finishing supply stores, and online.

A Note on Epoxy River Tables

If your table has an epoxy river, the care instructions for the wood portions are the same as above. The epoxy itself requires no oiling β€” just wipe clean with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners on the epoxy, as they can dull the surface.
