What Is a Live Edge Table and How Is It Made?

Live edge tables have become one of the most requested pieces in custom furniture β€” and it's easy to understand why. They bring the raw beauty of the forest into your home in a way that no other furniture style can match. But what exactly is a live edge table, and how does one go from a standing tree to a finished dining table in your home?

What Makes a Table "Live Edge"?

A live edge table preserves the natural, uncut edge of the wood slab β€” the organic contour where the tree's outer edge once was. Rather than squaring off the sides into straight lines, the craftsman works with the natural shape of the tree, keeping the curves, undulations, and character that make each slab unique.

The result is a table that looks like it grew that way. No two live edge tables are ever identical, because no two trees are ever identical.

Where Does the Wood Come From?

At Calgary Wood Works, we source our slabs from sustainable suppliers across Canada and the United States. We prioritize Canadian hardwoods β€” particularly Canadian black walnut, hard maple, and elm β€” because we believe in supporting local forestry and keeping the supply chain as short as possible.

When we select a slab, we're looking at several things:

  • Width and length β€” wider slabs are rarer and more valuable
  • Grain character β€” the flow and figure of the grain
  • Natural features β€” voids, knots, cracks, and burls that add personality
  • Moisture content β€” slabs must be properly dried before they can be worked

The Importance of Kiln Drying

This is one of the most important steps in building a live edge table that will last. Wood is a living material β€” it expands and contracts with changes in humidity. If a slab is not properly dried before it's built into a table, it will continue to move after the table is in your home, potentially causing warping, cracking, or joint failure.

We use kiln-dried slabs for all of our tables. Kiln drying reduces the moisture content of the wood to 6–8%, which is appropriate for indoor furniture in Canadian homes. Air-dried slabs can work, but they require much longer drying times and more careful monitoring.

How a Live Edge Table Is Made

Step 1: Slab Selection

The process begins with choosing the right slab. We photograph every slab we work with and share the options with our customers before the build begins. You're not buying a generic product β€” you're choosing a specific piece of wood.

Step 2: Flattening

Raw slabs are rarely perfectly flat. We use a large CNC router sled or hand planes to flatten both faces of the slab to a consistent thickness. This is precise, time-consuming work β€” a slab that isn't perfectly flat will rock on its base and look unfinished.

Step 3: Void and Crack Filling

Natural voids, cracks, and knots are part of what makes live edge slabs beautiful β€” but they need to be stabilized. We fill them with epoxy resin in black, clear, or coloured formulations depending on the customer's preference. The epoxy is poured in layers, allowed to cure fully, and then sanded flush with the surface.

Step 4: Shaping the Live Edge

The natural edge is cleaned up with hand tools β€” chisels, rasps, and sandpaper β€” to remove any loose bark and smooth the transition between the natural edge and the finished surface. We preserve as much of the natural contour as possible.

Step 5: Sanding

The slab is sanded through progressively finer grits β€” typically from 80 grit up to 220 grit β€” until the surface is smooth and ready for finishing. This step takes longer than most people expect. A well-sanded surface is the foundation of a beautiful finish.

Step 6: Finishing

We use Osmo Hardwax Oil as our standard finish. It's a penetrating oil-wax blend that soaks into the wood fibres rather than sitting on top as a film. The result is a finish that enhances the natural colour and grain of the wood, feels like wood to the touch, and is easy to maintain and repair over time. We apply multiple coats, sanding lightly between each one.

Step 7: Base Fabrication and Assembly

The base is fabricated separately β€” typically from steel, which we powder-coat in matte black or custom colours. The slab is attached to the base using wooden buttons or Z-clips that allow the wood to expand and contract seasonally without stressing the joints.

What to Look for When Buying a Live Edge Table

Not all live edge tables are created equal. Here are the things that separate a quality piece from a disappointing one:

Kiln-dried wood β€” ask your maker whether the slab was kiln-dried. Air-dried can work, but the moisture content should be verified.

Proper void filling β€” epoxy fills should be flush with the surface, bubble-free, and fully cured. Poorly filled voids will crack or shrink over time.

Floating attachment β€” the slab should be attached to the base in a way that allows seasonal movement. Rigid attachment will cause cracking.

Consistent sanding β€” run your hand across the surface. It should feel smooth and consistent, with no visible sanding scratches.

Quality finish β€” a penetrating oil finish like Osmo is generally preferable to a thick polyurethane coating for live edge tables. It's more repairable and feels more natural.
